Accent Walls
Having a custom look in your home can be accomplished inexpensively by creating an accent wall. There are many options to create this designer look on the cheap, especially if you are a handy homeowner.
There are also a lot of design ideas and how-to instructions on sites such as Pinterest, Houzz, etc., however some of the projects require a lot of specialized skills, tools, and patience. If you're going to DIY it, go simple.
PAINT: paint a wall a distinct color from the rest of the room to separate and highlight it. A slightly darker shade or a painted stripe can really help the wall “pop.”
WALLPAPER: believe it or not, wallpaper is back in style! There are new peel and stick options that can dress up any wall. We recently did this to a small bathroom. It looks great, but was much more difficult to hang than we thought it would be (YouTube makes things look so easy). Lining up the repeating pattern was extremely challenging, as was simply getting the paper straight on the wall. I highly recommend a non-repeating pattern if you plan to do it yourself.
BATTEN BOARD: these walls lean toward a more traditional feel, while adding a custom look to the room. We see this style often in many model homes and new builds.
SLAT WALL: this is a new twist on the old mid-century modern design. We recently created a slat wall in a small area of our family room to add balance to the room. We painted the wall behind the slats black and had a tradesman stain and install the wood slats. The result was a unique design that balances the room design.
