6 Mistakes That Can Completely Ruin Your Backsplash

  1. Pattern chaos - don’t choose a backsplash that fights for attention with your countertop. Keep one surface bold and let the other stay simple. If you have a busy counter, choose a neutral backsplash.

  2. Choosing the wrong color grout - high contrast grout can overpower your tile, while a tone that blends creates a seamless look. Choose a grout color that compliments but doesn’t compete.

  3. Forgetting to be practical - some material like unsealed stone might look beautiful at first, but can stain easily and be a nightmare to maintain. Choose something with less maintenance and more durability like glass or ceramic tile. it will stay beautiful longer.

  4. Stopping short - having an unfinished backsplash that ends in a weird spot. Either commit to full height by taking it all the way to the ceiling or stick to a clean line under the cabinets.

  5. Ignoring outlet placement - don’t let your outlets ruin your beautiful backsplash. If you can, recess the outlets under the cabinets. If that is not feasible for your project, choose outlet covers that match the tile color so the outlets fit in, not stick out.

  6. Tiny tile - these can look very chaotic in even a smaller kitchen. Remember scale and proportion. Tiny tiles might work in a powder room, but in a big kitchen can look busy.
